Information Technology

Strong Job Market
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts job openings in IT to grow faster than most occupations. Specifically, the Kansas Department of Labor noted five IT-related careers are among the top 10 fastest growing occupations in the state. As IT solutions continue to expand, professionals are needed in nearly every business sector. Graduates of the program can find careers as a computer networker, software developer, systems administrator, web system developer and information security technologist. Average or median salaries range above $80,000.

The Degree
The Bachelor of Science in Information Technology (BSIT) is offered by the School of Engineering in a face-to-face format at KU in Overland Park. The BSIT degree combines technical expertise with problem-solving and communication skills to plan, configure, implement, integrate and maintain computing and information technology solutions for an organization's computing infrastructure.

This program is designed for recent community college graduates and working professionals who are seeking to upgrade their technical knowledge. It also prepares students for graduate study in information technology at the Edwards Campus.

The information technology degree is distinctly different from computer science. Computer science programs focus on abstraction, algorithm development, scientific programming and compilers. Information technology degrees blends theoretical computing knowledge with applied technical skills to deliver solutions for a wide variety of IT needs.

Accreditation carries distinction
The KU School of Engineering and the Bachelor of Science in Information Technology holds ABET accreditation.

Quality and Convenience
Highly qualified, tenure-track (Ph.D.) faculty and professors of practice from the IT industry bring extensive knowledge and practical hands-on experiences to the classroom. Classes and student services are offered in the evenings to accommodate working professionals.

This program is funded by the Education and Research Triangle initiative.

The School of Engineering also offers a Master of Science in Information Technology (MSIT) at KU Edwards Campus. Students who complete their BSIT degree will have the opportunity to continue to or come back to obtain an MSIT.
